Art Gallery Calendar
Kent has been called the "Cultural Heart of the Litchfield Hllls" and for good reason. Kent has focused on art ever since a colony of artists discovered its natural beauty in the late 19th century. Members of that colony established the Kent Art Association in 1923 and this year the organization, still going strong, is celebrating its 101st year.
The legacy of those pioneering artists is everywhere. A casual visitor to Kent will notice that art graces the walls of the Fife ‘n Drum Restaurant and of the Kent Memorial Library. A number of craft galleries also grace the town center where you can find work of some of the top craftspeople from across the country or an assortment of American, Asian, African and Pacific Island art and antiques.

THE ART OF PAUL SAKREN
Paul painted landscapes of dreams and visions that surfaced from some deep place, populated with magical trees and spirit creatures. For most of his life he had recurring dreams of magical mountains which are featured in his most recent series of works.
Rather than trying to paint traditional landscapes, Paul wanted to create a sense of the dream quality that these landscapes had for him. The pieces tend toward a certain impressionistic abstraction, with shapes, colors and strokes representing the energy of subliminal imagery and symbolic content. Each painting tries to capture a sense of the light at certain magical times: twilight, dawn, dusk, sunrise. moonrise, phases and alignments of sun and moon, those ‘cracks between the worlds’ when the two sides of awareness touch each other.

WALKING NOT TALKING (Nature as Muse) featuring Margot Glass, Richard Klein, Francis Sills
Our midsummer exhibition focuses on three artists whose keen observation and connection to the natural world invites us to pause and appreciate. Margot Glass focuses primarily on drawing, using various traditional methods and materials as a foundation for her work, including traditional silverpoint and 14k goldpoint, homemade organic inks and oil and acrylic painting with mixed mica using fine point crow quill pens in place of brushes. Richard Klein has been copper plating organic objects for over three decades utilizing found objects that are intrinsically fragile and impermanent. The process allows Klein to encase natural objects in a thin coating of metallic copper, permanently preserving them. The alchemical transformation being both practical and poetic. Francis Sills’s work is grounded in the perceptual-based, realist tradition. The artist works directly from observation in nature. The flora series is an ongoing group of paintings utilizing the flowers and plants from the artist’s home garden. (read more…)
