Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church is located at 17 Bridge Street. It was officially established as a parish on June 12, 1970 with Rev. Vincent J Flynn serving as the first pastor. Prior to that, the church was a mission affiliated with both St Francis Xavier of New Milford and St Bernard''s of Sharon. Today, the pastor, Rev Thomas E Berberich, who celebrated a joyous 50th year Anniversary of Ordination in May of 2009, leads the parish family. The parish cemetery is located on Flanders Lane in Kent.
The parish is small in size, but has a huge impact on the Kent Community. Some activities include an annual Autumn Harvest Sale and Christmas Holiday Sale. The parish craft group meets weekly to make beautiful seasonal and holiday handmade items for each of the sales. The rewards of this program are realized with the support of missions and items for the church sanctuary.
The Prayer Shawl Ministry meets on the first and the third Saturday morning of the each month where the knit and crochet beautiful shawls that are blesses upon completion and the donated in the local community to those who are ill, lonely, suffering the loss of a loved one, and those in need of caring and loving warmth.
During the school year, the parish conducts Religious Education programs for both students and adults. The CCD Program, staffed by parish volunteer teachers for grades 1-8, meets weekly during the school year. The second graders celebrate First Communion in May. The confirmation Program for high school students meets for fourteen classes throughout the school year. Students are confirmed in the fall following completion of all the requirements. An Adult Bible study course is conducted from the Fall until Spring.
In January of each year, the men of the parish are invited to participate in the annual Men''s Retreat located at the Passionist Retreat Center in West Hartford. This is an enriching and rewarding weekend of prayers, contemplation, discussions, and great camaraderie for the men.
Stations of the Cross take place each Tuesday evening during the Lenten Season. This provides an opportunity to those attending to reflect on the Passion and the sufferings of Christ. The Easter Vigil Mass takes place on Holy Saturday evening at dusk where Baptismal promises are renewed and members rejoice and celebrate the Resurrection.
Pre-arranged Baptisms take place after Mass on Sunday. Each of the Baptismal gowns are handmade by women of the parish. The Sacrament of Reconciliation or Penance is available on Saturday afternoons and at additional times throughout the church year. Mass is celebrated monthly at The Kent Rehab Center, and the Rosary is prayed on first Fridays for Catholic Patients.
In conjunction with St. Andrew''s Parish, members gather on the first Sunday of each month, alternating parish halls to share coffee, conversation, and fellowship. This is popular ecumenical function to meet and greet and share time with others.
The parish is a strong supporter of the Kent Food Pantry. The F.O.R.G.E. Program wasestablished in the 1990''s specifically for this purpose. Feed Others Regularly, Generously, and Effectively has delivered literally tens of thousands of pounds of non-perishable groceries and household products since its establishment all through the generosity of the parish community.
The Parish Office is open three days a week for administrative functions and to answer any questions that may arise.
