ABOUT | Kent Affordable Housing

Working to improve housing opportunities in our community

Kent Affordable Housing was incorporated in 1990 to help families and individuals of modest means find affordable homes to rent and to own in the community. South Common, a 24-unit rental complex was inaugurated in 2003. A Parcel Program seeks to obtain building lots for construction of owner-occupied houses that will remain affordable. One home has been built on donated land, and KAH is seeking further parcel donations, as well as raising funds for support of other housing needs.

South Common

South Common is a 24-unit rental complex within pleasant walking distance of the Village of Kent, and is adjacent to a small public park. One - two - and three-bedroom apartments are home to families of many ages. Rents are based on income levels and unit size. Some apartments are adaptable for persons with disabilities. South Common is managed by Connecticut Real Estate Management.

Parcel Program

The KAH Parcel Program is a homeownership program that leases land parcels to Kent families of modest income, making it possible for them to build or buy their own homes minus the high cost of Kent land. Deed restrictions preserve the permanent affordability of the homes. KAH maintains a waiting list of program applicants, who are screened for residency, employment and income/assets that fall below what would allow them to compete in the current housing marketplace. We are seeking tax-deductible donations or bequests of land, of modest homes, of funds for site improvements or building. Bargain sales can also generate deductions.

The Night of a Thousand Pies

To raise funds for its programs, KAH hosts a Pie Festival in early November. The event is underwritten by local banks and businesses, and everyone in town is encouraged to bake pies and tarts of all flavors. A lunch featuring savory pies, soup or salad and dessert pies draws guests to a central location, where scores of other pies are available for tasting by the slice, or for purchase to enjoy at home. In the evening paying guests are invited to dinners by great Kent cooks, in some of Kent's most interesting houses, for varied menus and conversation with old and new friends. Prices for The Night of a Thousand Pies are modest, so this is an event that everyone who lives in or loves Kent can enjoy--as a donor or a diner, a baker or a buyer. www.kentaffordablehousing.org
